The Register: Google Book Search - Is it The Last Library? “Now that Google has already settled with authors and publishers, could another operation swing the same terms?” I don’t really buy the monopoly argument; if anything, it should be cheaper for others to scan books because the Book Rights Registry already exists and terms have been set. It would probably be better if there was a compulsory license rather than a settlement. (It’s vaguely interesting that nobody made a peep when Google monopolized the history of Usenet, but I understand that out-of-print books are more culturally valuable.)
